A Halloween Dinner Tradition

Growing up, our mom always made sure we had a hot, hearty dinner before we headed out with our candy buckets. It gave us a chance to sit down together before the busy night began, and it helped keep us from eating quite so much candy before bedtime.

I have carried that tradition on with my own kids. A regular dinner becomes so much more exciting when the meatballs have eyeballs, the garlic bread looks like a mummy, or the soup is cooked inside a pumpkin. These are the kind of Halloween dinner ideas for kids that make memories without requiring a complicated meal.

Our Favorite Halloween Dinner Ideas

These main dishes are festive enough for Halloween but still filling enough to serve before a night of walking from house to house.

Spaghetti and Eyeballs

Bowl of Spaghetti and Eyeball Meatballs with green olives.

This is always a hit. Juicy meatballs are topped with mozzarella and olive slices to look like eyeballs, then served over saucy spaghetti. It is creepy in the best possible way and easy enough for a weeknight.

Mummy Hot Dogs

Mummy hot dogs lined in a row with sprinkle eyeballs.

This is one of the easiest Halloween dinners you can make! Hot dogs are wrapped in crescent roll dough to look like little mummies. They are quick, inexpensive, and so fun for Halloween parties or dinner before trick-or-treating.

Dinner in a Pumpkin

Wooden spoon scooped out Dinner in a Pumpkin out of a baked pumpkin.

This savory ground beef and rice casserole bakes right inside a whole pumpkin. When it is done cooking, scoop the tender pumpkin from the sides and stir it into the filling. It is one of my favorite meals to make on Halloween night.

Soup in a Pumpkin

Ladle holding up a scoop of Soup in a Pumpkin.

For a dinner that really gets everyone talking, make this sausage, kale, Swiss cheese, and pumpkin soup inside a hollowed pumpkin. Serve it with crusty bread and let everyone scoop out some of the roasted pumpkin with their soup.

Chili Frito Casserole

Frito Chili Pie on a plate with the serving tray to the side. Bag of Fritos with chips coming out on the side.

If you need something quick and kid-friendly, this cheesy chili casserole is a great choice. It has layers of chili, corn chips, and cheese, and it is especially good for a busy Halloween evening.

Halloween Appetizers

If you are having people over or want a few things to snack on while dinner finishes, start with our Easy Halloween Appetizers. They are simple, festive, and easy to add to any Halloween dinner menu. This collection includes:

Halloween Drinks

Halloween drinks can be as easy as juice and lemon-lime soda with gummy worms or plastic spiders. If you want something a little more special, try one of these fall favorites. These are especially fun if you are planning a Harry Potter-themed Halloween dinner or party.

Halloween Dessert Ideas

Candy is a given on Halloween, but I still like to have a real dessert for the grown-ups. Pumpkin desserts are always a good fit for the season, and a few candy eyes, candy corn pumpkins, or frosting spiders can make almost any dessert look Halloween-ready.

Halloween Treats for Kids

These treats are perfect for classroom parties, trunk-or-treats, Halloween sleepovers, and family movie nights. Keep candy eyes on hand because they can turn cookies, cupcakes, graham crackers, and other simple treats into little monsters in seconds.

An Easy Halloween Dinner Menu

If you do not want to choose between all the different Halloween dinner ideas, this is the menu I make when I want the whole meal planned for me. It serves 4 to 6 people for dinner which you can easily double or triple, with enough Spider Cake to serve 12 to 15 people.

A Halloween Dinner with spaghetti and eyeballs, spider Caesar salad, mummy bread, and halloween punch.

Main dish: Spaghetti and Eyeballs

  • Use your favorite spaghetti sauce, spaghetti noodles, meatballs, mozzarella cheese, and olives.
  • For the twirled spaghetti nests, twirl a large scoop of spaghetti with a fork inside a ladle, then slide it onto each plate.
  • Set out Parmesan cheese for sprinkling over the top.

Side dish: Caesar Spider Salad

  • Use a bagged Caesar salad kit and add plastic spiders to the top for a quick Halloween look.
  • For edible eyeballs, place a small circle of string cheese on halved grape tomatoes and top each one with an olive slice.
  • Add grilled chicken if you want to make the salad a little more filling.

Bread: Mummy Cheesy Garlic Bread

  • Place strips of mozzarella or string cheese over bakery garlic bread to look like mummy wrapping.
  • Bake at 375 degrees F for about 5 minutes, just until the cheese melts.
  • Add olive slices for eyes.

Drink: Halloween Punch with Shrunken Apple Heads

  • Let the kids carve jack-o-lantern faces into apple halves.
  • Bake the apple halves at 200 degrees F for about 10 minutes, then chill before adding them to the punch.
  • For the punch, combine 2 liters water, 2 liters chilled ginger ale, 46 ounces chilled pineapple juice, and 4 Green Apple Jolly Rancher drink-mix packets.
  • Add ice to individual glasses instead of the punch bowl so the drink does not get watered down.

Dessert: Giant Spider Cake

This cake is one of the most fun parts of the menu. It looks impressive on the table, but it is easy enough to make with the kids.
